Common questions on gold prices in India
Everything worth knowing before you buy, sell or invest in gold.
How is the daily gold rate in India decided?
Domestic gold prices are derived from the international spot gold price (in USD per ounce), converted to INR via the current exchange rate, then adjusted for import duty (currently 6%), 3% GST, and local jewellers' association margins. IBJA publishes reference AM & PM rates every trading day.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?
24K gold is 99.9% pure and is used for coins, bars and investment. 22K (91.6% pure, also called "916 gold") is the standard for jewellery in India as pure gold is too soft. 18K (75% pure) is harder still and is typically used for diamond and stone-set jewellery.
Why do gold rates differ across cities and states?
Local variations come from state-level taxes, octroi, transportation costs and each city's jewellers' association benchmark. Southern cities like Chennai and Hyderabad often trade slightly higher due to strong wedding-season demand.
Do the prices shown here include GST and making charges?
No. The rates above are the benchmark bullion prices. Retail jewellery invoices add 3% GST on the metal value and separate making charges (typically 8–25%), plus GST on the making charge.
How often is this page updated?
The benchmark rates refresh twice daily in line with IBJA's AM and PM publications, and city/state prices update once the local associations release their rates. The date and market-open status update automatically.
Is buying physical gold better than gold ETFs or SGBs?
Each has trade-offs. Physical gold suits jewellery needs but adds making charges and storage risk. Gold ETFs and Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) track gold prices without storage cost — SGBs additionally pay 2.5% annual interest and offer tax-free capital gains on maturity.
