Common questions on silver prices in India
Everything worth knowing before you buy, sell or invest in silver.
How is the daily silver rate in India decided?
Domestic silver prices are derived from the international spot silver price (in USD per ounce), converted to INR via the current exchange rate, then adjusted for import duty (currently 6%), 3% GST, and local bullion association margins. IBJA publishes reference AM & PM rates every trading day.
What is the difference between 999, 925 and 800 silver?
999 silver (also called "fine silver") is 99.9% pure and is used for bullion, coins and bars. 925 silver (sterling silver, 92.5% pure) is the global jewellery standard — the extra copper adds durability. 800 silver (80% pure) is typically used for coins and traditional utensils.
Why do silver rates differ across cities and states?
Local variations come from state-level taxes, octroi, transportation costs and each city's bullion association benchmark. Southern cities like Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala often trade at a ₹4,000–5,000 per kg premium due to strong seasonal demand.
Do the prices shown here include GST and making charges?
No. The rates above are the benchmark bullion prices. Retail silverware and jewellery invoices add 3% GST on the metal value and separate making charges (typically 8–20%), plus GST on the making charge.
Is silver a good investment compared to gold?
Silver is more volatile than gold — its dual role as both an investment asset and industrial metal (used in solar panels, EVs, electronics) means it can outperform gold in bull cycles but also fall harder in bearish phases. Watch the "gold-silver ratio" — historically it averages 65–75; ratios above 80 often favour silver.
How can I invest in silver without buying physical metal?
Silver ETFs (like Groww Silver ETF, HDFC Silver ETF) track spot silver prices and can be bought via any demat account. Silver ETF FoFs let you invest via SIP without a demat account. Both avoid storage risk and making charges that come with physical silver.
